oh ok, so it is ok if i inquire with packet 8? because i thought that this kind of action was not suitable with them (sending the item to the philippines when it is under contract for U.S use) so i hesitated about asking them.

thanks anyway! =)

Hi Chelle,

You're in a better position to get help from packet8 from the US than I here in the Philippines .
I'm sure their customer support can answer your inquiries.

so, how do i activate it? do i connect it over my own internet connection here in the U.S., and enter that activation code that is demonstrated on packet 8's site and will require my local service's access code/pass code?

because in the first place, i was just planning to send him the phone and not even deal with it myself here because i'm not familiar with all this technical stuff.

bear with me, i'm a noob at this =)

Hi Chelle,

1.)
You'll need to ask your boyfriend how he accesses the Internet at his dorm. If they have a LAN cable, he can connect the packet8 device to the LAN cable. If they use WiFi (more likely), he will need to use some additional hardware to pick-up the WiFi signal and connect it to the packet8 device via LAN. I don't know the details, but your boyfriend's neighborhood techie might be able to figure it out.

Here's a caveat, though. Voice quality is affected by the type of Internet connection. If your boyfriend is using a public internet connection, there's a good chance that the voice quality will be low. Over here at my brother's office, they attempted two different VOIP services and each service was affecting the other on his private Internet connection. This is more likely to happen with a public internet connection.

2.)
I believe activation needs to be done in the US. And I think it's better that way so that you have access to the packet8 customer support to answer your questions before you send over the hardware to the PHilippines.

Hope this helps.

hi. i just signed up for packet8 yesterday and watched the demo video as to how setup works on the site.

i have alot of questions that i hope can get answered. i am sending this phone to my boyfriend in the philippines because we usually spend more than 300/mos. on phone cards with very poor quality/line disruptions thus leading to wasted dinero.

here are my questions.

1. my boyfriend is staying at a dorm which already supplies an internet service that is included in the monthly rent. as far as i know, with packet8, all you need is a modem for the internet, the packet8 box and the LAN cable.you plug the LAN cable into the modem and packet8 box and disconnect the PC line and attach it to the box as well and voila--it works? anyway... what if the modem is not supplied? i'm not familiar on how internet works in the philippines.. so if the dorm includes internet service, does that mean that each room should have their own modem? and if not..what can i do to substitute for that? will a router be required?

2. it says that, when you finally plug-in the packet8 device, you would have to go on a certain site to activate it and for this you must acquire internet access and pass code from local service provider. i'm assuming that, it should be provided by the internet provider there? or should it be done here? because regarding from your blog, it says that you registered the device herE? not unless..you were reffering to "acquiring the local telephone number" here. so whose access pass code should be taken? mine here in the US or there's in the philippines?

hope someone can get back to me regarding this and it will truly be appreciated!

hi Sandy,

Two answers, depending on what you mean:

1.) connect the hardware in Japan to call the US unlimited -- Yes, this can be done.

2.) connect the hardware in the Philippines to call Japan unlimited -- No, that is not how the service works.
