My 25-year-old pamangkin in Los Angeles, Gino, has found a way to
(1) communicate regularly with his brother Cram in the Philippines through unlimited calls and
(2) earn an additional revenue stream for their Internet shop in the Philippines.
Let me tell you how.
a.) Gino subscribes to a service via www.packet8.net . The service gives him some hardware which allows the user to make unlimited US and Canada calls via the Internet. Basically, the device is plugged into an ethernet (LAN) port, then a regular phone handset is plugged into the device. The device needs to be registered in the US for first time use. Subscription fee: $20 per month.
b.) Gino then sends the device to the Philippines where Cram plugs in the device to their local area network. Now Cram has a Voice-over-Internet telephone in the Philippines that has a US telephone number.
c.) Cram can make unlimited phone calls to any US and Canada number. Cram can also receive unlimited phone calls from any US/Canada number. That’s how Gino and Cram keep in touch over land and overseas …. (Vol – tes – payb!)
d.) Lastly, Cram provides calling services to patrons of their Internet shop. They charge Php5 per minute for calls to US and Canada. This is half the price of the common 20 US cents (around Php10) for IDD calls by telcos.
This saved Gino a lot of dollars! They used to spend as much as $300 per month on call cards with a limited number of hours on the phone. Now they get unlimited call hours, any time of the day for $20. Kewl, huh?
If you or some relatives are in the US or Canada, you can do the same. Visit www.packet8.net . I heard Vonage has a similar service too. Try them out.

It is illegal to charge money for international phone service. This is why VOIP is not commercially available in the Philippines. If NTC finds out you are doing this, they can close you down!
Hi Kmagg50,
hmmm…. I’ve heard this before. But I couldn’t reconcile how NTC plans to implement this. Do you have any reference links we can read?
I know of a company that charges for VOIP — Netopia http://www.netopia.ph/netphone/ — and they have an IDD service which appears to be commercially available in most of their branches around the Philippines.

Hello,
My boss sent me a Vonage equipment here in the phils and I couldnt seem to make it work. I am using SMARTBRO as my ISP and I was told that VOIP will not work with it bcoz its wireless broadband. Called Vonage but they said its fine but I have tried it and I am not able to find out what’s wrong. When my Smartbro was connected, they did not have a modem installed w/c from what I know is a requirement for the Vonage equipment to be attached on. I was told to buy a router so I can attach the equipment but others are telling me that I dont need to buy one. Im getting pretty desperate..PLEASE HELP!!!
Hi andy,
Ask a technical person to check-out your home/office setup. Show the technical person the Vonage equipment.
If the vonage device uses an ethernet cable (LAN cable) - you probably need to have a router / switch.

In reference the previous questions;
SmartBro and Vonage access, Yes it works fine, however you will have to have a broadband router, you can not just unplug from the PC and plug into the Vonage device, SmartBro registers the MAC address of the device plugged into it and if you change devices you have to go back through the smart portal to log in and re register the above mentioned MAC address (different on each item plugged into it, i.e lan card, broadband router, vonage device) the rouoter circumvents the issue.
Angels issue; Yes it can be done but if there is no internet access available then you might have to consider upgrading his cp to one of the nokias that support SIP protocols and internet calls ( N80 up, and E65 up), from there the cp would connect via 3g through smart/globe and register the phone with the vonage/packet8/voip.com switch in the states. But enjoy that scenario while it lasts, i am sure the greedy bas%$^&*(rds at smart and globe will eventually block the ports needed to use the service in an effort to pad there already padded puckets.
God I love this country but it could be so much better without the corruption and greed…lol
Thanks for sharing, Lanrover! Please drop by every so often, I think many more readers can benefit from your advise.

is it applicable in japan??
hi Sandy,
Two answers, depending on what you mean:
1.) connect the hardware in Japan to call the US unlimited — Yes, this can be done.
2.) connect the hardware in the Philippines to call Japan unlimited — No, that is not how the service works.
goodluck!

Vonage is suck!!! I’m one of the victim
Hi Jen,
Why?
ka edong
hi. i just signed up for packet8 yesterday and watched the demo video as to how setup works on the site.
i have alot of questions that i hope can get answered. i am sending this phone to my boyfriend in the philippines because we usually spend more than 300/mos. on phone cards with very poor quality/line disruptions thus leading to wasted dinero.
here are my questions.
1. my boyfriend is staying at a dorm which already supplies an internet service that is included in the monthly rent. as far as i know, with packet8, all you need is a modem for the internet, the packet8 box and the LAN cable.you plug the LAN cable into the modem and packet8 box and disconnect the PC line and attach it to the box as well and voila–it works? anyway… what if the modem is not supplied? i’m not familiar on how internet works in the philippines.. so if the dorm includes internet service, does that mean that each room should have their own modem? and if not..what can i do to substitute for that? will a router be required?
2. it says that, when you finally plug-in the packet8 device, you would have to go on a certain site to activate it and for this you must acquire internet access and pass code from local service provider. i’m assuming that, it should be provided by the internet provider there? or should it be done here? because regarding from your blog, it says that you registered the device herE? not unless..you were reffering to “acquiring the local telephone number” here. so whose access pass code should be taken? mine here in the US or there’s in the philippines?
hope someone can get back to me regarding this and it will truly be appreciated!
Hi Chelle,
1.)
You’ll need to ask your boyfriend how he accesses the Internet at his dorm. If they have a LAN cable, he can connect the packet8 device to the LAN cable. If they use WiFi (more likely), he will need to use some additional hardware to pick-up the WiFi signal and connect it to the packet8 device via LAN. I don’t know the details, but your boyfriend’s neighborhood techie might be able to figure it out.
Here’s a caveat, though. Voice quality is affected by the type of Internet connection. If your boyfriend is using a public internet connection, there’s a good chance that the voice quality will be low. Over here at my brother’s office, they attempted two different VOIP services and each service was affecting the other on his private Internet connection. This is more likely to happen with a public internet connection.
2.)
I believe activation needs to be done in the US. And I think it’s better that way so that you have access to the packet8 customer support to answer your questions before you send over the hardware to the PHilippines.
Hope this helps.
ka edong
so, how do i activate it? do i connect it over my own internet connection here in the U.S., and enter that activation code that is demonstrated on packet 8’s site and will require my local service’s access code/pass code?
because in the first place, i was just planning to send him the phone and not even deal with it myself here because i’m not familiar with all this technical stuff.
bear with me, i’m a noob at this =)
Hi Chelle,
You’re in a better position to get help from packet8 from the US than I here in the Philippines .
I’m sure their customer support can answer your inquiries.

Patience, dear Chelle. Your guy’s lucky
Goodluck!

oh ok, so it is ok if i inquire with packet 8? because i thought that this kind of action was not suitable with them (sending the item to the philippines when it is under contract for U.S use) so i hesitated about asking them.
thanks anyway! =)
